8th World Symposium of the OWHCFirst Invitation

September 19 to 23, 2005
Cusco, Peru

First invitation

With the support of UNESCO, the Getty Grant Program, and benefiting from the scientific support of the Getty Conservation Institute, the city of Cusco and the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) invite professionals, political authorities and heritage managers to take part in the 8th World Symposium, which will have as a theme:

"HERITAGE OF HUMANITY, A HERITAGE WITH HUMANITY"

Modalities of the meeting:

Incorporating the principles and the goals of the OWHC and taking the unique opportunity provided by this meeting to bring together political authorities, experts in heritage conservation and preservation, as well as professionals involved in social and economic issues and in the planning of heritage cities, the organizers wish to revive the debate in order to generate a true dynamism of exchange and dialogue among all the participants.

As indicated in the preliminary program of the meeting, the workshops of the scientific meeting will focus on specific themes, presented under the form of a conference hosted by renowned experts. A designated professional will be in charge of introducing the subject, specifying the concept, summarizing the last developments and developing the major issues to be debated by the participants at the presentations and during the discussions regarding specific cases related to the issue.

In order to meet textually the second goal of the OWHC, it has been seen appropriate to present study cases that will make it possible to link theory with practice for each of the themes addressed. The official languages of the OWHC are French, English and Spanish. The work selection committee will be made up of three members who will make the political decisions and three professionals who will implement the development, both on the political level and on the level of the concepts related to these themes. The six members will thus have the opportunity to debate their opinions.

The professionals will be selected by the scientific committee set up by the GCI and the regional offices of the OWHC, and will subsequently be invited by the organizing institutions.

However, the participants interested in sharing their experiences and their ideas on the themes addressed will be able to do so by submitting projects for a poster show. This creative and original approach will allow them to exchange during the poster session provided for on the timetable.

Themes / Lines of thought:

Development of the experience of the population in the recovery and revitalization of world heritage cities

To analyze, evaluate and disseminate various experiences and achievements related to the safeguarding and the preservation of heritage, from the perspective of the population of a world heritage city.

Toward an understanding of the identity and the intangible culture in world heritage cities

To analyze the activities of the population that focus on the safeguarding of the cultural identity in world heritage cities.

Evaluation of the influence of tourism on the use of urban space and its impact on the population

In addition, these works will be distributed in electronic format to all the participants registered in the Symposium.
